NASCAR driver Tony Stewart ran over a competitor, 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr., during a sprint-car race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park Saturday night in upstate New York.
The Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a news release that the victim was declared dead 45 minutes after the accident upon arrival at Thompson Hospital. The video below captured the confrontation and had over 4 millions views in the first 24 hours after the accident.
Stewart has not been charged with a crime and Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero stated on Sunday there are “no facts in hand that would substantiate criminal intent from any party.”
If Stewart avoids criminal charges, Ward’s family could sue for wrongful death, which refers to negligently causing the death of another.
