Games of the XXXI Olympiad, August 5 – 21st August 2016
The 2016 Rio Games will be the first Olympiad to take place in South America. The two-year countdown marks the beginning of the final organizational phase for Rio 2016, as the Organizing Committee moves from planning into operational preparations.
Events will be staged in 34 venues, of which 18 are already operating, nine are new and seven are temporary. They are spread over four districts known as Olympic clusters: Barra de Tijuca, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracana. Soccer games will be held in various stadiums outside the city.
“With two years to go until the Games, we have concluded the exclusive planning phase, and are now entering the operational preparation phase, when the competition structures begin to take shape and we get closer to the population”
Carlos Nuzman, President of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee.
In addition to the launch of a new Rio 2016 Web site, the Organizing Committee marked the two years to go milestone by unveiling details of 45 pre-Games events that will be held in the host city to help build excitement for the Games.
By the end of the year, Rio 2016 will also launch the volunteer and ticketing programs, in addition to the official mascot, as the countdown to the Games continues.
