Worst Journalism of 2014 List

2014 was a year that many of us want to forget. Tragic news, accidents, wars, even Ebola!

CNN’s Don Lemon covered many of the important news items of 2014 and, well, he made some blunders that put him in Columbia Journalism Review worst journalism of 2014.

Some of his memorable blunders:

  • March 20, 2014: Don Lemon asked guests whether Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 could have been swallowed by a black hole: “I know it’s preposterous, but is it preposterous?”
  • Nov 18, 2014: When an alleged Bill Cosby rape victim appeared on his show, he lectured, “You know, there are ways not to perform oral sex if you didn’t want to do it… Meaning the use of teeth, right?”

According to CNN, Don Lemon serves as an adjunct professor at Brooklyn College, teaching and participating in curriculum designed around new media. He earned a degree in broadcast journalism from Brooklyn College and also attended Louisiana State University.

Also on Columbia Journalism Review worst journalism of 2014 was Rolling Stone magazine, which acknowledged serious missteps in its report on an alleged University of Virginia rape. “The disintegration of the magazine’s visceral campus rape story from Nov. 19 wins this year’s media-fail sweepstakes.”
