Brazil over Colombia 2-1, Neymar Out Of World Cup

54 fouls, the most of the World Cup so far! 31 by Brazil, 23 by Colombia

“Referee should have done more to take control of the match,” Brazilian coach Scolari

Colombia’s coach Jose Pekerman told his team “Look ahead; each match is a new challenge and brings new, demanding opponents. We can’t think about what happened in the past.”

Good advice for Colombia, a team that lost 23 out of the 25 previous matches vs Brazil, but “Los Cafeteros” were not able to improve the record. With goals from Thiago Silva and David Luiz, Brazil defeated Colombia 2-1. At the last two World Cups, Brazil lost to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals in 2010 and to France in 2006. This time, the World Cup 2014 host will play Germany on Tuesday in Belo Horizonte.

Colombia came in as the Group C winner who defeated Uruguay in the the round of 16, scoring 11 goals and conceding just two during this World Cup. Brazil was the Group A leader, won two of their four matches within 90 minutes but were held to a draw by Mexico in the first round and needed a penalty shootout to beat Chile in their last match.

Neymar Out Of World Cup
After 88 minutes of play, Colombian defender Juan Camilo Zúñiga went airborne on a loose ball and ended up driving his knee into the lower back of Neymar. The Brazilian striker was carried off the field in tears on a stretcher and “screamed in pain in the dressing room” before being taken to the hospital, the Brazilian confederation said in a statement early Saturday.

Neymar’s teammates could be seen signaling the bench for a stretcher. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where a crowd of fans soon formed. An X-ray revealed he had fractured one of his vertebrae.

Rodrigo Lasmar, Brazil’s team doctor, said: “This news is not easy but he will not be available for the rest of the World Cup. Neymar has a broken vertebra. He will be out for four to six weeks.”

Colombia’s Zuniga defended the challenge, claiming he did not deliberately try to hurt Neymar. “It was a normal move” he said. “I never meant to hurt a player. I was on the field, playing for the shirt from my country, not without the intent to injure. I was just defending my shirt.”
